We switched to a combination of Visual SVN server and a couple of different clients. On the Mac we use “Cornerstone” and on the PC we use "Tortoise SVN”. They work pretty well.

[...] What’s Wrong with Adobe Version Cue CS4 ….We quickly discovered that despite all of our testing there was another bug with Version Cue server. We do not have a workaround for this one and unfortunately Adobe has been unresponsive in regard to whether or not they are going to fix the problem. The bug that exists causes Photoshop to stutter and not respond for anywhere from 2-10 seconds while doing simple tasks, such as selecting a layer or moving a layer, among others..
Did you see the open letter from Adobe Support to the customers apologizing for the crappy customer service and issue resolution? I think that you should follow up on behalf of all of us using the information you have collected here (I could not have put any of it myself). Feel free to include my name and email as a pissed off customer. I am sure others on here would be on board as well. I am also going to follow up with them again. Maybe with the new policy we can beat some sense into them on this thing.

I was experiencing this stutters and pauses even when running Photoshop and Version Cue Server on the same machine.

After wrestling with this and getting no answer on the Adobe Forums I ran Adobe Updater manually. There were pending updates for both PS CS4 and VC CS4. I hadn't checked manually because I'd seen Adobe Updater running in the dock once a week or so, but apparently Adobe Updater is not reliable and there were months of updates and bugfixes. I don't know which fix fixed my issues, but 90% of the stuttering and pauses were fixed by applying these updates. There's still a pause when switching from Full Screen to Standard Mode, but not in the middle of drawing or during other operations.

It may not be helpful to anyone's particular situation, but the key here is: do not trust Adobe Updater to let you know when there are updates. Run it manually, especially if you're experiencing some sort of troubles.

Doug,

thanks for your blog. We were starting to embark on moving from shared drive repositories to VCM aligned with our CS4 shift, and starting to run into problems. Your blog probably saved us uncounted hours of frustration with VCM CS4. Looks like we should dig out our VCM CS3 disks and use that until VCM CS4 is stable.

Does anyone have a link to a good analysis of small-group change management systems for Adobe? Here at our company we use SVN and VSS for software, but these (in my understanding) are really designed around text based files and choke on large binaries... never mind have no path to video file management & tagging.

Thanks!

Adobe support (Yes we paid for that "punch line") is useless. I opened several cases disclosing bugs and they either respond with useless information by typically clueless individuals or they don't respond at all. Not sure which is worse. When I finally spoke to a product specialist we basically said that it was a known bug but they probably wouldn't fix it (I'm paraphrasing). His suggestion, along with a few others at Adobe, was to submit feedback because that was the only way to get it fixed. That's why i encourage everyone to click the feedback link and let them have it for their horrible joke of a software release.

Have you managed to get no satisfaction from Adobe on this? I have encountered the same issues that you have, but fortunately we have not shelled out the cash for CS4 yet. Nor will we until Adobe gets their act together. It is telling that they have posted no further updates on the support site, that the blog is down, and all talk of the SDK is totally MIA. What is really bad that as a result, many of the applications that you could get to replace VC don't yet work with CS4. And Adobe still does nothing, says nothing, even after getting what I would imagine is a plethora of calls like yours. Will they not put you in touch with someone from the VersionCue Engineering Team? Crazy.

Version Cue CS4 is a disaster. After a week from hell, realizing that it wasn't us... that it was the application. We switched back to CS3.

Good news is that have been able to use Version Cue CS3 with all of our CS4 applications. The only drawback is that it isn't integrated with the actual applications. For example, in Flash you have to uncheck Enable Version Cue or else you're in trouble.

But is saves to the server and we check-out and check-in files without incident. I'm still in awe that Adobe had destroyed an excellent application (VC CS3) and has done nothing to resolve the issues of VC CS4.
